The TIQRA Programme: Education of 210 physiotherapists for rural Afghan communities by 2018

The Afghan health sector suffers from severe shortages of qualified human resources, especially midwives, health nurses and physiotherapists.

With support of the Norwegian and Swedish governments NAC has been educating hundreds of midwives and community health nurses over the past decade. To meet the vast need for physiotherapists throughout the country, NAC has now launched a 30 months education program in Kabul and Kapisa. The initiative is supported by the European Union and implemented in collaboration between three consortium partners: Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC), Handicap International (HI) and Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA). A total of 210 (male and female) physiotherapists will be trained in seven training centers throughout Afghanistan. Students from all 34 provinces have been recruited in collaboration with Provincial Public Health Departments. NAC is responsible for two physiotherapy training centers; one in Kabul, where the program is taught in Pashtu, and; one in Kapisa, where language of instruction is Dari. 71 students (42 young men and 29 young women) from the provinces of Bamiyan, Ghazni, Kabul, Kapisa, Khost, Logar, Paktia, Paktika, Pansjir, Parwan and Wardak are enrolled in the program. When they graduate in 2018 they will return to their home districts to work in smaller clinics and hospitals, and provide vital rehabilitation services for children, youth, women and men with disabilities and disabling health conditions. This program will be an important contribution to the Afghan government’s efforts to provide access to quality health services for all.  Image: The TIQRA Programme: Education of 210 physiotherapists for rural Afghan communities by 2018
