Building Skills-for-Jobs in the Public and Private Health-Care Sector

PROVIDING SKILLED HEALTH-CARE WORKERS FOR RURAL AFGHAN COMMUNITIES

The Afghan health-care sector suffers from a shortage of qualified staff, especially in rural and hard-to-reach communities. Responding to the request by the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, and the Provincial Departments of Public Health in the provinces of Ghazni, Khost, Paktia and Paktika, the Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC) will educate: Laboratory technicians; Pharmacy Assistants, and; Physiotherapists, at the newly established regional Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) in Gardez, Paktia Province. The Study Program will be implemented with the financial support of Norad and the Norwegian Center for International Cooperation in Education (SIU), and with technical support from Lærdal Global Health (LGH).

The student intake will consist of 90 young women and men from Ghazni, Khost, Paktia and Paktika provinces. Altogether:

  • 30 students in Physiotherapy – on a 3 year study program;
  • 30 students in Laboratory Technology – on a 2 year study program;
  • 30 students in Pharmacy Technology – on a 2 year study program;

 will be enrolled and receive theoretical and practical training at the Gardez IHS. The students after their graduation will be sent back to their villages in order to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the Afghan people.
