Field of Thoja at NAC's nursery farm Dasht-s Qurough
NAC developed and operates 27 nurseries in which different types of trees and seeds are grown to be planted in gardens and parks and for the purpose of re-establishing forest. These nurseries also serve as training centres for farmers and others to get proper training in forestry and how the fruits and nuts can be monetized. These nursery farms are also used to increase awareness of the importance of forests and viable environmental management in the local community.
Flood Protection
400 000 Afghans are affected annually by natural disasters such as landslides, droughts and floods. NAC watershed management projects focus on planting robust tree species on exposed land slopes to prevent landslides.
Forest Management
NAC has carried out plantation over 51 square miles in Afghanistan. In order to ensure that forests are managed effectively, NAC started a program encompassing reforestation, terracing and capacity building. For this purpose, NAC recruited foresters who are volunteers from the villages. Their tasks are supervision of forests and to create awareness about importance of forests in the community.
Foster Mums
NAC has focused on providing Afghan women with livelihood, education and training. Foster Mums are trained in how to nurture and take care of saplings and seedlings which they grow in their own backyard, and receive food or money in reward. The women gather regularly at nursery farms to receive training which enables them to socialize and interact with each other and help to bring them out of their isolation.

Culturally and traditionally, Afghan women have little freedom of movement outside their home and are not allowed to socialize with men outside their family. Therefore, meeting points for women are scarce in Afghanistan. At the request of the local women's ministry in Badakshan, NAC has established a park with access exclusively for women so that Afghan women have a safe place to meet and socialize.
Environmental and rural development
Environment work could be profitable. It provides jobs, business opportunities and hence locally sustainable development for the people. Farmers in the village of Rawza have established a source of living by growing seedlings, which will be planted to prevent flooding around Sheer pond in Ghazni. Over the course of three years, NAC will construct a total of 45 kilometers of terraces and plant 150,000 trees of various kinds.
NAC aims to dig deep wells and reconstruction of traditional Afghan irrigation system "Karez".
